Stow’s hand appears in many manuscripts. Kingsford lists many volumes once belonging to Stow, or in his autograph, in his edition of A Survay of London, vol. i, p. lxxxvi–xciii, and added to the list in his Additional Notes (1927).

The aspect of Stow’s hand is particularly distinctive. Its notable features include the use of a very fine nib, the forwards slant, and the occasional deviation of the line from the horizontal. The ‘z’ like appearance of the letter ‘r’ is exceptional. The overall appearance is initially daunting, but the characters are well formed and the reading is never in doubt.
